چکیده

-Hydration behavior of Na-smectite crystals synthesized at a pressure of 5.5 GPa and temperatures of 1400"-1500~ was examined by X-ray powder diffraction at various relative humidities (RH) in the range of 0-100%. The basal spacing of the Na-smectite crystal increased stepwise with increase in RH. The reflections observed were only normal reflections of a single or dual hydration states of smectite. No irrational, intermediate, or asymmetrical reflections were observed. The simple hydration behavior, not known for natural smectite with fine particle sizes and low crystallinity, indicates that the Na-smectite crystals are as perfect as common inorganic crystals with an ordered structure. Key Words--High-pressure experiment, Hydration, Relative humidity, Smectite crystal.

TEXTURAL AND HYDRATION PROPERTIES OF A SYNTHETIC MONTMORILLONITE COMPARED WITH A NATURAL NA-EXCHANGED CLAY ANALOGUE Authors

An aluminous montmorillonite has been synthesized at hydrothermal conditions (623 K, 120 MPa) and compared to the natural Na-exchanged Wyoming montmorillonite (Na-SWy2). The synthetic product is characterized by a high cation exchange capacity (83 meq/100g) and ethylene glycol specific surface area (764 m 2 /g) similar to Na-SWy2 but with a higher purity with one crystalline phase. Compacted sm...

Spectroscopic study of carbaryl sorption on smectite from aqueous suspension.

Sorption of carbaryl (1-naphthyl-N-methyl-carbamate) from aqueous suspension to smectite was studied using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) (for batch sorption), and quantum chemical methods. The amount of carbaryl sorbed was strongly dependent on the surface-charge density of the smectite with more sorption occurring on the two "low" surface-char...

Deep ultraviolet light-emitting hexagonal boron nitride synthesized at atmospheric pressure.

Materials emitting light in the deep ultraviolet region around 200 nanometers are essential in a wide-range of applications, such as information storage technology, environmental protection, and medical treatment. Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), which was recently found to be a promising deep ultraviolet light emitter, has traditionally been synthesized under high pressure and at high temperatur...

Intercalation and Retention of Carbon Dioxide in a Smectite Clay promoted by Interlayer Cations

A good material for CO2 capture should possess some specific properties: (i) a large effective surface area with good adsorption capacity, (ii) selectivity for CO2, (iii) regeneration capacity with minimum energy input, allowing reutilization of the material for CO2 adsorption, and (iv) low cost and high environmental friendliness. Smectite clays are layered nanoporous materials that may be goo...

Water Sorption on Martian Regolith Analogs: Near-infrared Reflectance

Introduction: Due to large variations of both surface temperature and amount of water vapor in the atmosphere, relative humidity at the Martian surface is subject to variations of several orders of magnitude. As a result, minerals of the regolith that are in direct contact with the atmosphere are susceptible to adsorb and desorb water over diurnal and seasonal cycles [1,2,3]. Near-infrared refl...
